Amidst the bustling city of Beijing, lies a quiet sanctuary known as the Altar of Earth and Harvests. This unassuming altar, nestled within Zhongshan Park, holds a significant place in China’s history. The Altar of Earth and Harvests, also known as the Shejitan, served as a vital link between the emperors and the gods of land and grain during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Built in 1421, it stands as a testament to the importance of agriculture in ancient Chinese society. The emperors performed rituals here, offering soil and grain from across their vast empire. These offerings symbolized the emperor’s dominion and sought blessings for bountiful harvests. The altar itself is a simple, three-tiered square platform crafted from white marble. Its square shape reflects the ancient belief that the Earth is square. Five distinct colors of earth adorned the altar’s surface: yellow in the center, green in the east, red in the south, white in the west, and black in the north. These colors corresponded to the five elements of metal, wood, water, fire, and earth. They represented the origin of all things. The low red walls surrounding the altar are set with glazed bricks in four colors, each signifying a cardinal direction. The Hall of Worship, or Baidian, stands north of the altar, a beautiful example of classical architecture with its exposed rafters and corner brackets. Constructed during the Ming dynasty, this hall sheltered the emperors during their ceremonies. It later served as a temporary resting place for Sun Yat-sen’s coffin in 1925, after which it was renamed Zhongshan Hall. The Altar of Earth and Harvests may not possess the grandeur of some of Beijing’s other imperial temples. Yet, its simple elegance speaks volumes about the deep connection between the emperors, the land, and the people’s well-being. It is a place where the earthly and the divine converged, a testament to a time when rituals and ceremonies played a vital role in ensuring the prosperity of the nation.
