“Families that play together, stay together.” It’s more than just a saying here at Alta Lodge. Alta Lodge is Alta’s first ski lodge. It has been hosting skiers since 1940. Imagine the stories these walls could tell.

Alta Lodge isn’t just a place to stay. It is a historic mountain inn. It offers a classic ski vacation. The atmosphere is authentic, personal, and informal. It’s reminiscent of a time when ski accommodations offered more than just a bed.

The Denver & Rio Grande Railroad Company built Alta Lodge. It opened on November 29, 1940. Over the years, Alta Lodge has welcomed many notable guests. Actor Errol Flynn, author William F. Buckley, Jr., and economist Milton Friedman all stayed here. Many more guests return year after year. They come to enjoy the great skiing and the intimate, relaxed atmosphere.

The original lodge had 20 small rooms. Many are still in use today. The Levitt family added to the original structure several times. In 1963-64, they added the Middle Wing. This includes the 20s, 30s, and 40s hallways. In 1968, they added the East Wing. That’s the 100s and 200s. Architect John Sugden designed these renovations. He studied under famed Bauhaus architect Mies van der Rohe. These additions brought mid-century modernism to Alta. The simple walls of glass offer stunning views. They provide a natural mountain experience.

Later additions included the Pools building. There is also the Deck Room and the expanded Dining Room. The dining room has views of Mt. Superior. You can also see lower Little Cottonwood Canyon from there.

Alta Lodge has grown over the years. It started with 12 guest rooms and now has 57. Some rooms have private balconies and fireplaces. There are some luxury touches. High-speed WiFi has been added. However, some things don’t change. There are still no televisions in the lodging rooms. Great food, personal service, and the authentic community spirit of Alta remain.

Alta is known for light, dry, deep snow. It offers world-renowned powder skiing. The terrain is suitable for every level of skier. Bluebird days and winter storms are common here. Alta connects us to the soul of skiing.

Fine food, personal service, and a perfect ski-in/ski-out location are offered. Over seventy percent of guests return each winter.

Alta Lodge is also a charming mountain destination in the summer. From early June to mid-October, it is available for weddings and receptions. You can also book meetings or retreats and reunions or special events. The lodge is open to the public for Sunday Brunch.

Many families have been booking the same week each year for generations. This low-key but stylish lodge is home to the famed Sitzmark Club bar. Saunas and hot pools are set against a 30-foot wall of windows. You can work out the kinks after a day on the slopes. Breakfast and dinner are included during ski season. Budget travelers can opt for a bed in one of the shared dorm rooms.

Love blooms at Alta Lodge’s alpine setting. It is closer than you think. It is miles away from the pace of city life. Alta Lodge is a perfect place to begin your forever. Whether you’re eloping with an intimate group or hosting an elegant, all-weekend event.

Here at Alta Lodge, we offer more than just a place to stay. We offer an experience. A chance to connect with loved ones. An escape from the everyday. A place to create memories that will last a lifetime.
