Journey with me back to the early 1880s. The first settlers arrived in this area, drawn by the promise of a new life. They named their community Alta Loma, Spanish for “high ground.” We stand now before the Alta Loma Plaque, a testament to this resilient community. This plaque, erected in 1994 by the Texas Historical Commission, commemorates the rich history of Alta Loma, a once-thriving town now part of Santa Fe. Alta Loma wasn’t always a quiet corner of a larger city. It boasted a bustling community life. A school, built in 1896, served as a hub for education. It was moved several times before finally consolidating with other schools in 1943. The Alta Loma Post Office, established in 1910, connected residents to the wider world until its closure in 1921. Both the school and post office played vital roles in this sprawling ranching community. They served a large area, linking scattered families and businesses. The town’s growth continued into the early 20th century. Driven by the fruit industry, dairy farming, and beef cattle, Alta Loma flourished. The Hoyland and Johnson Creamery, built in 1912, became a local landmark. By 1915, the population reached 500, a testament to the town’s prosperity. Later, nearby oilfields brought new opportunities and further growth. Alta Loma’s story took a turn in 1978. The neighboring city of Santa Fe incorporated Alta Loma into its boundaries. Eventually, even the post office name changed to Santa Fe in 1982. Though Alta Loma’s name may have faded from maps, its story lives on. This plaque, standing tall, reminds us of the pioneers who built this community and the vibrant life they created here.
