One fateful day in 1896, Dr. Sophronia Nichols, holder of California medical license #26, opened her home in Alpine. This very home is now part of the Alpine Historical Society. The Alpine Historical Society is a testament to the rich history of this mountain community. It’s a living storybook, preserving and sharing tales of Alpine’s past. The Society’s mission is clear: to ignite a passion for preserving Alpine’s historically significant features. This includes everything from natural resources and parklands to the diverse cultural, ethnic, religious, and social groups that shaped Alpine. The Alpine Historical Society sits on the grounds of Heritage Park. Here, three historic buildings, including Dr. Nichols’ home, stand as witnesses to the passage of time, all dating back to the late 1800s. Another noteworthy structure is the Adam and Caroline Beaty house, built in 1899. This home represents the resilience of Alpine’s earliest settlers. Inside, a restored doctor’s buggy, made by Larkin & Sons in San Francisco in 1906, stands as a tangible link to the past. The Society opens its doors to the public the last weekend of each month, from 2 pm to 4 pm. If you’re lucky enough to visit during Alpine History Day on June 4th, you’ll witness the community come alive with the spirit of the past.
