This is a story about resilience. It’s a story about a man who rose from slavery to become one of the most prominent African American entrepreneurs in Atlanta. Alonzo Herndon, whose life is celebrated on this plaque, was born into slavery in Walton County, Georgia, in 1858. After the Civil War, Herndon’s family faced hardship, forced to work as sharecroppers. But Herndon was determined to rise above his circumstances. He left his home with only eleven dollars and started a new life. With a keen eye for business, Herndon eventually opened a barbershop in Atlanta. He became known as the “Barber of the Elite,” serving prominent white men in the community. Herndon didn’t limit his ambition to barbering. In 1905, he acquired a small mutual aid association and renamed it the Atlanta Life Insurance Company. It quickly grew into one of the most successful black-owned businesses in the country. Alonzo Herndon’s journey highlights how even in the face of immense adversity, dreams can be achieved with hard work, determination, and a belief in oneself. He is a powerful symbol of the African American experience in Atlanta and a testament to the human spirit’s ability to overcome.
