Some say that in times of flooding, you can still hear them. The echoes of screams and the frantic splashing of the Douro River as it claimed the lives of thousands. We are standing before the Alminhas da Estivada, a bronze monument that serves as a chilling reminder of a horrific day in Porto’s history. On March 29, 1809, Porto found itself trapped in the crosshairs of Napoleon’s ambition. French troops under Marshal Soult were advancing, and the city’s residents panicked. Their only escape was the Ponte das Barcas, a fragile bridge of boats strung across the Douro. As a massive crowd surged onto the bridge, desperately trying to flee the approaching French, the unthinkable happened. The bridge buckled under the weight and snapped, plunging an estimated 4,000 souls into the unforgiving water. The Alminhas da Estivada, created by sculptor Teixeira Lopes in 1897, captures the agony and terror of that day. The anguished faces, the desperate struggle, a city’s collective heartbreak, frozen in time. This is not just a monument. It is a solemn reminder of the human cost of conflict and a testament to the resilience of the people of Porto. They rebuilt their lives and their city from the ashes of tragedy, but the memory of the Alminhas da Estivada ensures that the lost souls of the Douro are never forgotten.
