Why is there a small box for collecting alms here? We are standing in front of the Alminhas da Cruz. This wayside shrine features a niche placed upon a table-like structure, all sheltered by a tiled roof. The Alminhas da Cruz is crowned with a sculpted cross. Look closely at the tile panel within the shrine. It depicts a poignant scene of the crucified Christ, flanked by two angels, with souls seeking solace in the background. The box for alms is a reminder of a time when people believed they could offer prayers and alms to help those souls find peace.
