Almeida Park in Bandra West Mumbai is more than just green space. It’s a tribute to Professor Raphael d’Almeida. He was a renowned botanist. He was also a former Mayor and Municipal Councilor. He dedicated his life to making Bandra greener. He made it better for future generations.
The park covers 1.6 acres. It boasts indigenous trees. It also has special botanical ones like Gulmohar Banyan Chiku Mango and many more. These trees some over 100 years old came from different continents. They celebrate biodiversity. They celebrate Professor d’Almeida’s passion.
The park underwent a major renovation. This was after remaining closed for over a year. It reopened on October 24 2022. That’s also Professor d’Almeida’s birthday. The renovation included making the park more accessible for the elderly. New benches were installed. Lighting and landscaping were improved. Sadly a planned elevated tree walkway was scrapped. The materials weren’t eco-friendly.
The reopening ceremony was special. Busts of Professor and Elfreda d’Almeida were unveiled. Family members attended. They shared nostalgic memories. Elfreda d’Almeida was also a remarkable woman. She was an Honorary Presidency Magistrate. She was a Justice of Peace and a social worker.
