Imagine colossal sticks of chalk transforming a space. That is the essence of Allora & Calzadilla’s Chalk. This installation invites us to reconsider collective drawing. It highlights ephemeral art.

Allora & Calzadilla are Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla. They are a collaborative duo of visual artists. They live and work in San Juan Puerto Rico. They met while studying abroad in Florence Italy in 1995. Since then, they have worked in various media. Their art includes sculpture photography and performance. Their art also includes sound and video.

Chalk is not just about the medium. It delves into themes of history ecology and geopolitics. Allora & Calzadilla critically address these entanglements. They use a multiplicity of artistic media. They create a dynamic engagement with art history. This results in attention to the conceptual and the material. It highlights the metaphoric as well as the factual.

Consider their project Land Mark. It encompasses film video and photography. These pieces relate to Vieques a Puerto Rican island. For 60 years the United States used it for military operations. This led to civil disobedience by local residents. Through this work Allora & Calzadilla interrogate markers. They examine economic cultural and political markers. These markers differentiate areas of land. They investigate colonization and gentrification.

Allora & Calzadilla have explored the dynamic between music and power. Their pieces trace sonic militarism. They explore its relationship to contemporary culture and political ideology.

Allora & Calzadilla’s work moves beyond the purely human. It engages with the worldly. Their artworks illuminate entanglements. They explore connections between humans and nonhumans.

The artists presented Intervals. This two part exhibition was at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. It was also at The Fabric Workshop and Museum. They employed objects films and live performances. Sound was also used to invoke geologic time. They sought to define our place within it.

Allora & Calzadilla represented the United States at the 2011 Venice Biennale. Their exhibition included Armed Freedom Lying on a Sunbed. It also featured Track and Field.

Their works are held in public institutions. These include the Museum of Modern Art and the Tate Modern. Their art can also be found at the Centre Pompidou.

Allora & Calzadilla’s Chalk embodies their artistic vision. It is more than a drawing. It is an exploration of shared expression. It is a commentary on societal forces. It transforms the mundane into the monumental. It makes you think about impermanence and collective memory. It asks what marks we leave behind.
