As you climb the hill towards Allinge Church, you might feel like you are stepping back in time. This magnificent building stands tall and proud, overlooking the vibrant town of Allinge.

Allinge Church is not only a place of worship but also a testament to the rich history of Bornholm. Built in the 14th century, it has witnessed the changing tides of time and still has much to tell. It was initially a small granite longhouse, but in 1892, it underwent a significant transformation. Architect Mathias Bidstrup completely rebuilt the church, imbuing it with a Neogothic style that has since become a hallmark.

Did you know, it wasn’t always called Allinge Church? Its earliest known name was “Alende Capell,” which signifies its importance even before the Reformation. The structure was once under the jurisdiction of the Archbishopric of Lund but then went on to serve the Danish crown. These days, it stands independently, a testament to its unwavering presence.

As you look at the intricate details, notice the transition from the original late-Gothic longhouse to the newer additions. The tower, which is slightly narrower than the main body, dates back to the 16th century. It was rebuilt in 1865 when the upper part was renovated. Look closely and you might see the remnants of the original arched windows, a testament to the church’s evolution.

The church’s interior boasts many treasures. The Renaissance pulpit from 1650 is a masterpiece, adorned with ten carved panels that feature statues of the four Evangelists. The Frobenius organ, now in the north transept, dates from 1962, while the granite baptismal font is from 1890. You are also surrounded by several headstones dedicated to generals who served at Hammershus, a reminder of the region’s dramatic past.

While Allinge Church has undergone many transformations, it continues to be a vital part of the Allinge-Sandvig community. It invites visitors to experience its rich history and its unwavering spirit. It is a symbol of a place where the past meets the present, and a reminder of the enduring power of faith.
