Allennes-les-Marais boasts a rich history stretching back to at least 675 AD. Its name itself hints at its origins perhaps meaning “by the alder river” or “alder grove”. The commune has changed hands many times. It belonged to the Abbey of Saint-Pierre de Gand. Then it was under the control of the Abbey of Saint-Martin de Tournai until the French Revolution.

A powerful lord once held sway over Allennes-les-Marais. Before the Revolution the land was a seigneury. Four families controlled this powerful position. They administered justice over the inhabitants. One notable figure was Hugues de Neuville. He was a lord of Allennes-les-Marais. Sadly he fell in the Battle of Agincourt in 1415. This illustrates the turmoil of the period.

Life in Allennes-les-Marais wasn’t always peaceful. During the Spanish occupation of 1566 the locals bravely helped repel the Gueux. Later in 1642 the Duke of Milleray ravaged the village. He burned down the large farm. This left Allennes-les-Marais scarred. The damage illustrates the volatility of the region during times of conflict.

The commune’s marshy land played a significant role. An ordinance in 1669 allowed lords to claim a share of the profits from the marshes. By 1777 most of the remaining marshland was divided. The villagers themselves benefited. The change demonstrates a shift in local power dynamics.

The industrial age touched Allennes-les-Marais. A significant coal-fired power plant operated there. This was the Ansereuilles thermal power station. It began in 1959 and was eventually decommissioned in 1984. The remains of this plant remain. They are a visible reminder of this phase in its history.
