Let’s journey back. Allen Park was first incorporated as a village in 1927. It became a city in 1957. The city got its name from Lewis Allen. He was a lawyer and lumberman. Allen owned 276 acres of land. His land was in present-day Allen Park and Melvindale.
Ford Motor Company plays a big role here. Many of Ford’s facilities are in Allen Park. The promise of good pay drew immigrants. Hungarians, Poles, Italians, and Armenians moved here.
Allen Park has a unique claim to fame. It is home to the Detroit Lions’ headquarters. The team’s practice facility is here since 2002.
The Uniroyal Giant Tire is a landmark. It started as a Ferris wheel. This was at the 1964 New York World’s Fair. It then moved to Allen Park in 1966. The tire is eighty feet tall. It weighs twelve tons.
Allen Park also has a history with bowling. Thunderbowl Lanes hosted the PBA World Series of Bowling. It was the main site in 2009. This event featured several tournaments.

The Ecorse River runs nearby. Early French settlers called it the Riviere aux Ecorces. This means “bark river”. Native Americans used bark in burial rituals there.
Today, Allen Park continues to grow. The Fairlane Green Shopping Center opened in 2006. It adds to the city’s appeal. Allen Park offers a blend of history and community spirit.
