The Université catholique de Lille’s history traces back to 1875, a period of intense debate surrounding secularism in France. A group of determined individuals, concerned by the lack of a Catholic institution in Lille, established la Catho in the same year the Wallon Law freed higher education. Philibert Vrau, a key figure in this endeavor, played a pivotal role in its founding, driven by the belief that education should be accessible to all, regardless of background or belief. The university’s coat of arms, designed in the 1870s, reflects this commitment. The keys of Saint Peter symbolize la Catho’s connection to the church, while the open book signifies its dedication to academic pursuits. The inclusion of the Lion of Flanders pays homage to the region’s heritage, and the European flag represents its global outlook. La Catho quickly expanded, adding a Faculty of Medicine in 1876 and a College of Theology the following year. Its official inauguration, marked by a papal bull granting canonical status, took place on January 15, 1877. Today, the Université catholique de Lille is a dynamic hub of learning and research. Its sprawling campus, nestled in the heart of the city, houses five faculties: Law, Medicine and Maieutics, Business, Economics, and Sciences, Arts and Humanities, and Theology. In addition to its faculties, la Catho boasts over twenty schools and institutes, including prestigious engineering schools and the esteemed ICAM. The university’s commitment to research is evident in its numerous research teams, tackling diverse subjects from nanoscience to theology. The AEU, the student support association, manages student residences and the bustling Meurein restaurant, the heart of campus dining.
