Marvelous All Souls College Chapel isn’t it? Its beauty speaks volumes. This magnificent chapel is more than just a pretty building. It’s a living testament to Oxford’s rich history. It’s a place where centuries of prayers have echoed.

All Souls College Chapel was planned built and endowed in the 1430s. Henry Chichele Archbishop of Canterbury was the mastermind behind it. King Henry VI even co-opted as co-founder. The chapel’s construction began in 1438. The first mass was celebrated in 1442.

This wasn’t just a religious undertaking. Chichele envisioned a graduate college. A center for advanced studies in theology law and medicine. All Souls College Chapel served a dual purpose. Religious services were held. The Fellows prayed for the souls of founders. They also prayed for those lost in the French Wars. They prayed for all faithful departed.

The chapel’s interior is breathtaking. Notice the 15th-century hammer-beam roof. See the gilded wooden angels adorning the beams? They’re from the 15th century too. Their current splendor is thanks to a late 20th-century regilding.

The chapel’s reredos dates back to around 1447. It’s filled with statues. Saints bishops and monarchs. Arranged on either side of a Crucifixion scene. There is also a Last Judgement scene high above. The original statues were destroyed during the Reformation. Gothic imitations replaced them in the 19th century.

The chapel’s antechapel windows contain some 15th-century stained glass. A truly remarkable sight. A baroque Chapel screen stands proudly. Designed by Sir James Thornhill in 1716. It was restored and regilded in the late 20th century. This screen replaced one attributed to Christopher Wren. The sundial’s design is attributed to Wren. It was moved to its current position in Victorian times.

All Souls College Chapel’s history is a tapestry woven with faith scholarship and resilience. It has weathered storms. It has adapted and evolved. This Oxford landmark continues to inspire awe. It offers a glimpse into Oxford’s past. It remains a significant part of its present. It beckons to the future.
