In 1853, a seed of faith was planted in Jordanhill. Jane Charlotte Smith, a woman of vision, opened her home, Jordanhill Mansion, to miners and laborers. She offered them not just education but spiritual solace. These humble gatherings blossomed into Episcopalian services, first in a barn, then in a dedicated chapel school. All Saints Scottish Episcopal Church, as we know it today, began to take shape in 1904. The foundation stone was laid on March 26th, and by November 1st, the church was consecrated by Bishop Ean Campbell of Glasgow. The church’s Neo-Norman architecture, designed by James Chalmers, stands as a testament to this rich history. Imagine the skilled hands that laid the red ashlar stones, creating the cruciform structure we admire today. Inside All Saints, art and faith intertwine. Sir Robert Lorimer’s carved oak reredos grace the interior. Some bear the artistic touch of Phoebe Anna Traquair, a rare example of her work in Glasgow. Nine stained-glass windows illuminate the space, each telling a story of devotion. The east window, a triple oriel installed in 1911, is particularly poignant. It depicts Christ in Majesty and serves as a memorial to Jane Charlotte Smith, the woman whose vision gave birth to this spiritual haven. All Saints Scottish Episcopal Church is more than just a building. It is a living embodiment of a community’s faith, nurtured over generations.
