All Saints Church is the Church of Ireland Parish Church of Raheny. It stands proudly on Howth Road. This architectural gem replaced the old St Assam’s Church. Its construction began in 1885 thanks to the generosity of Arthur Guinness the 1st Baron Ardilaun. He funded the project with around 9000 pounds. The church’s design is early English style. Its cruciform shape is striking.
The walls are made of Wicklow granite with limestone dressings. The belfry is substantial. It boasts Cumberland slates an octagonal spire and a weathervane. A small crypt holds the remains of some Guinness family members. The building process wasn’t without its delays. A death in the Guinness family postponed the dedication service. Full consecration was impossible until 1969 because the Howth Estate held the land’s freehold. Lord Ardilaun insisted on the church’s rites being standard and the maintenance of both old and new churches. He agreed to maintain the building on those conditions.
The church saw many changes over the years. Lady Ardilaun gifted a new organ in 1919. A one-ton bell arrived in 1926. In 1938 the Bishop transferred the church to the Representative Church Body. The church’s fiftieth anniversary was celebrated in 1939. An additional acre of land was purchased from Dublin Corporation in 1945. In 1960 the parish united with Coolock. The Johnston Hall was dedicated in 1969. The freehold was finally acquired that same year for 250 pounds. This allowed for the church’s full consecration in 1989. The church even hosts concerts occasionally.
Today All Saints Church stands as a symbol of enduring faith and community. It’s a place where history resonates. The church grounds are filled with activity. They house Johnson Hall and All Saints Hall. These are used for church activities and community events. A modern rectory and a well-preserved gate lodge also stand on the grounds. The church underwent restoration work in the 2000s. Roof repairs were completed in 2012 after a significant fundraising effort.
