Did you ever imagine a small mission church evolving into a cornerstone of a community? All Saints Catholic Church, nestled in El Sereno, has witnessed such a transformation. All Saints Church began its journey as a humble mission, served by the dedicated priests of Sacred Heart Parish in Los Angeles. The area, once a tranquil hamlet known as “Birdstown,” saw few families in the early 1900s. Residents would trek miles to neighboring towns for their spiritual and material needs. But the seeds of a vibrant community were sown. In 1926, recognizing the mission’s growth, Bishop J.J. Cantwell designated All Saints as an independent parish. Reverend Paul Dillon became the first resident pastor. The first mass was held on April 26th of that year in a modest church on Rosemead Avenue. A new chapter began for All Saints Church in 1930 with the construction of a new church building. It was dedicated on May 25, 1931, by Bishop Cantwell. A rectory followed in 1932. A significant milestone was reached in 1948 with the opening of All Saints Catholic School. On September 13th, 357 students filled six grades, fulfilling a two-decade dream. The Sinsinawa Dominican Sisters, founded in 1847, staffed the school. Further growth came in 1955 when Father James Nevin oversaw the construction of a new convent. And in 1962, a parish hall was dedicated, completing the parish complex. All Saints Church continued to flourish under a series of dedicated pastors. Then in 1968, another pivotal moment arrived. The Minim Fathers assumed leadership, marking a new era. Fathers Gino Vanzillotta and Costantino Mandarino became the first Minim Fathers to lead an American parish. All Saints Church has a rich history. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith and community in El Sereno.
