Remarkable All Saints isn’t it? This building whispers tales of faith resilience and surprising reinvention.

All Saints Church on Alexander Drive in Douglas boasts a history richer than its surprisingly modern exterior suggests. Initially a simple corrugated iron structure known as the “Tin Tabernacle” it opened its doors in July 1898. The Manx weather proved too harsh. After sixty years the original building was replaced.

The new All Saints consecrated in April 1967 was a stunning modernist design. It became one of the Isle of Man’s most striking buildings. Its angular concrete form stood in stark contrast to the island’s traditional architecture. Think of it a bold statement in the landscape. This concrete church with its twelve apostle windows made of Gothenburg colored glass was truly unique.

Sadly structural problems forced its closure in May 2017. The cost of repairs was simply too high. Before its final closure Culture Vannin stepped in. They documented the church with photographs and film preserving its memory for future generations. These records capture not just the building itself but also the spirit of the place. The many personal stories and connections woven into its walls.

Today All Saints lives on but in a new guise. It has been transformed into a gym. While its original purpose has changed All Saints continues to serve the community. Its history is preserved. The building’s original hard floor is still there under gym mats. All the windows and internal walls remain. They stand as a testament to the building’s resilience. A symbol of adaptation to the changing times. All Saints’ story reminds us that even in change there’s a way to preserve a space’s spirit and beauty. It’s a testament to faith community and the enduring spirit of the Isle of Man.
