From humble beginnings in the Twin Cities and St Cloud it blossomed into the Metropolitan Community Church of the Twin Cities in 1974. Sunday afternoon services laid the foundation for a burgeoning community.
Officially chartered in 1976 the church quickly became a beacon of hope. It wasn’t without its struggles. A 1977 television special fueled a backlash. Vandals attacked their host church. Yet the congregation persevered. Growth continued leading to a second congregation in St Paul.
The AIDS crisis tragically united them. They became All God’s Children Metropolitan Community Church a powerful symbol of unity within the LGBTQ community and beyond. The move to their current building at 31st and Park in 1986 marked a significant milestone attendance tripled.
All God’s Children Metropolitan Community Church didn’t just offer solace. They championed social justice. Their advocacy for same-sex marriage was unwavering. While they’d celebrated same-sex unions since the 1970s the wider world lagged. A 2004 renewal of vows ceremony for sixty-five couples made headlines. It was a bold statement. The church actively opposed anti-marriage legislation. They were among the first to celebrate marriage equality in Minnesota in 2013.
