Five hundred thousand souls rest here. Welcome to All Faiths Cemetery. This sprawling 225-acre expanse in Middle Village Queens wasn’t always a haven for all faiths.

It began in 1850 as the Lutheran Cemetery. Pastor Frederick W Geissenhainer a visionary man saw an opportunity. He wanted to offer affordable burials. Green-wood Cemetery in Brooklyn was expensive. Geissenhainer’s vision provided a much-needed alternative. Initially burials cost just $2.50. Plots were available for a mere $7.00.

The cemetery’s history reflects the changing demographics of New York City. Initially serving primarily German Lutherans the cemetery has evolved. Today All Faiths Cemetery reflects the diversity of Queens. Its grounds hold the remains of people from many different backgrounds and beliefs.

All Faiths Cemetery is more than just graves. It’s a repository of stories. Consider the General Slocum disaster. In 1904 a steamboat fire claimed over 1000 lives. Sixty of the unidentified victims were buried here. The General Slocum memorial stands as a poignant reminder of this tragedy.

The cemetery also holds the Trump family plot. It’s not readily revealed. However the graves of Fred Trump his wife and their son are here. The gravesite includes Donald Trump’s father. His mother Mary Anne MacLeod Trump is also buried here.

In recent years All Faiths Cemetery has faced challenges. Vandalism and disrepair have been issues. Allegations of mismanagement have also surfaced. These difficulties highlight the challenges faced by many older cemeteries. The need for proper funding and upkeep is vital.

All Faiths Cemetery isn’t just a place of mourning. It’s a place of reflection. A journey through its history is a journey through the history of New York City itself. Each headstone tells a unique story a life lived a family remembered. The cemetery is a testament to the enduring human spirit. Its existence speaks to our shared experiences of loss and remembrance. Take a moment to reflect on these stories as you explore the grounds.
