Alipore Central Jail

Locked away within the formidable walls of Alipore Central Jail, countless stories of India’s struggle for independence echo. Alipore Central Jail stands as a silent witness to a turbulent era. It was once a place of confinement for revolutionaries and freedom fighters. Alipore Central Jail played a significant role in India’s fight for freedom. Many brave souls were imprisoned here for their defiance against British rule. The jail witnessed both quiet acts of resistance and dramatic events. Among those held within these walls was Aurobindo Ghosh, a key figure in the fight for independence. During his time at Alipore Central Jail, from May 1908 to May 1909, he experienced a profound spiritual transformation. He penned a series of articles. These writings offered a glimpse into the lives of those confined within the jail’s walls. They were later compiled and published as “Tales of Prison Life”. Alipore Central Jail was also the site of executions. Kanailal Dutta and Satyendranath Bose were hanged here in 1908 for their role in the assassination of a British informant. Charu Chandra Bose met a similar fate in 1909 after being convicted of assassinating a public prosecutor. The names of other martyrs are etched in the history of Alipore Central Jail. Birendranath Datta Gupta, Gopinath Saha, Pramode Ranjan Choudhury, Ananta Hari Mitra, Dinesh Gupta, Ramkrishna Bis, and Dinesh Majumdar all sacrificed their lives within these walls. The Alipore Jail held political prisoners like Subhas Chandra Bose. It also housed the Alipore Jail Press. The jail officially closed its doors on February 20, 2019. Today, Alipore Central Jail serves as a museum. It commemorates the sacrifices made in the pursuit of India’s independence. The museum now stands as a testament to the resilience and courage of those who fought for freedom.
