On a cool March day in 1809, the Alimnhas da Ponte witnessed a horrific event. The Ponte das Barcas, a pontoon bridge spanning the Douro River, groaned under the weight of thousands. These desperate souls fled Porto, seeking escape from the advancing French troops under Marshal Soult. The Alimnhas da Ponte, a future memorial, silently observed the unfolding chaos. The bridge, unable to bear the strain, buckled and collapsed. Thousands plunged into the icy Douro. The Alimnhas da Ponte became a silent witness to the heart-wrenching screams and the desperate struggle for survival. Nearly a century later, in 1897, the Alimnhas da Ponte memorial was created. Sculptor José Joaquim Teixeira Lopes captured the tragedy in bronze. The Alimnhas da Ponte depicts the terror and despair of that fateful day. The anguished faces and outstretched arms of the figures speak volumes. Today, the Alimnhas da Ponte stands as a poignant reminder of this catastrophe. Locals and visitors come to pay their respects.
