Envision, if you will, a quiet corner in Berlin’s Mahlsdorf district, where the Alice-Herz-Platz resides. This place is more than just a city square. It carries a story of peace, activism, and remembrance.

Alice-Herz-Platz. It was originally known simply as Platz 18. This happened during the early 20th-century development of Mahlsdorf. But in 2003, it transformed into a tribute to Alice Herz. She was a German pacifist and journalist.

The story of Alice Herz is remarkable. Her family once owned a house in Mahlsdorf. It was located at Akazienallee 4/5. As the shadow of Nazism grew darker, Alice and her daughter Helga left Germany in 1933. They sought refuge, eventually finding a new home in Detroit, USA.

Alice’s commitment to peace only deepened over time. She became a vocal opponent of the Vietnam War. Her activism reflected her deep-seated belief in non-violence.

But there’s a twist to this story. In a tragic act of protest, Alice Herz immolated herself in 1965. She did this to protest the Vietnam War. It was a desperate act to make her voice heard.

Back here at Alice-Herz-Platz. It’s designed as a green space within a triangle of streets. The layout features trees, bushes, and a sense of tranquility. Imagine strolling along the paths. They wind through the square. You will notice the benches. They invite you to pause and reflect.

Did you know that this square fell into disrepair before its renaming? Yes, Alice-Herz-Platz was once a neglected space. A local newspaper brought this to public attention. The district council then stepped in to renovate the area. It was a symbolic act of renewal.

Since 1999, a wooden sculpture of a loving couple has stood here. It adds a touch of art. This is within this peaceful environment.

The renaming ceremony on January 27, 2003, was a significant event. Karin Schubert, the Mayor of Berlin, led the ceremony. Representatives from the district council and the Jewish community of Berlin were present. The square became a symbol of remembrance and a statement of peace.

The Alice-Herz-Platz project was supported by the Berlin State Women’s Council. It promoted the naming of public spaces after women.

So, as you stand here, remember Alice Herz. She was a woman who dedicated her life to peace. Alice-Herz-Platz stands as a testament to her ideals. It’s a place for reflection, remembrance, and a continued call for peace.
