Bronze Gleams Under Bucharest’s Sky
Here we stand before the Alexandru Lahovary Statue a testament to a pivotal figure in Romanian history. This bronze monument isn’t just a pretty face in Lahovari Square. It’s a powerful symbol. It represents Alexandru Lahovary a man who held immense power and influence.
The Alexandru Lahovary Statue was created by the French sculptor Jean-Marius Antonin Mercié. Unveiled on June 17 1901 it stands as one of the first statues of a contemporary Romanian political leader. Notice the detail. Observe Lahovary’s pose. He’s depicted as an orator his left hand outstretched. He’s addressing the people he served.
At the base two allegorical figures flank the main statue. One represents Danubius a masculine allegory of the Danube River. This refers to a famous speech Lahovary gave in 1881. The other figure a woman in national costume embodies Romania Agricola or according to some interpretations Modern Romania. She offers Lahovary a laurel branch a symbol of respect and admiration.
Initially bronze plaques with quotes from Lahovary’s speeches adorned the statue’s base. Sadly they’ve vanished. Some believe this happened after 1947. The reason? The title of one inscription may have included the phrase “The Birth of Prince Carol.” This removal speaks volumes about shifting political climates and censorship.
The Alexandru Lahovary Statue wasn’t erected overnight. The Conservative Party commissioned it in 1899 shortly after Lahovary’s death in 1897. Funding came from public subscription. This demonstrates the profound respect people held for him. The statue was cast in France. It arrived in Bucharest around May 1 1901. Then it was finally installed in what was then Dorobanți Square. Later it became Lahovari Square.
The Alexandru Lahovary Statue is listed on the Romanian historical monuments registry. It’s a Class B monument holding significant historical importance.
