Renamed in 1805 to honor Tsar Alexander I, today we find ourselves at Alexanderplatz. It stands as one of Berlin’s most visited and historically significant locations. This square has transformed dramatically over centuries.
Originally, this area was outside Berlin’s city walls. It began as a humble cattle market in the 13th century. Over time, it evolved into K\u00f6nigs Thor Platz, or King’s Gate Square, after King Frederick I.
Now known simply as “Alex” by Berliners, Alexanderplatz has witnessed pivotal moments. Imagine the square during the March Revolution of 1848. Barricades rose up as revolutionaries fought for change. Later, in 1989, it was the site of massive protests. These demonstrations called for the government to step down. They ultimately contributed to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
The square suffered extensive damage during World War II. Much of Alexanderplatz lay in ruins. In the 1960s, East Germany redesigned it. The goal was to reflect socialist ideals. This is why you see expansive open spaces here.
Look around. You will notice iconic structures. The Fernsehturm, or TV Tower, dominates the skyline. It was constructed in the 1960s. It stands as one of Europe’s tallest structures.
Check out the World Clock. It is a turret-style clock showing times for 148 major cities. Erected in 1969, it became a popular attraction and meeting place.
The Fountain of Friendship between Peoples stands as another landmark. It was built in 1970. This fountain features copper, glass and ceramic elements.
Alexanderplatz is also a major transportation hub. Several U-Bahn and S-Bahn lines converge here. Trams and buses connect at Alexanderplatz as well.
Shopping enthusiasts will love Alexanderplatz. Department stores and boutiques line the square. A large shopping mall named Alexa opened near Alexanderplatz in 2007.
However, Alexanderplatz is also considered a kriminalit\u00e4tsbelasteter Ort. That means a “crime-contaminated location”.
The Berolina statue once stood here as well. It was a female figure symbolizing Berlin. The statue was removed in 1944.
Buildings around Alexanderplatz have been renovated. The Centrum department store, now Galeria Kaufhof, was enlarged. The Hotel Stadt Berlin is now the Park Inn.
The urban planning continues to change. There are plans to construct skyscrapers. The majority of the planned skyscrapers will probably never be built.
Alexanderplatz stands as a testament to Berlin’s ever-evolving history. It is a place where the past and present intertwine. From cattle markets to revolutionary protests to modern shopping, Alexanderplatz remains a vibrant center of Berlin life.
