Remember the name Alexa. It’s not just a voice assistant. Here in Berlin, it is also the name of a major shopping mall right on Alexanderplatz.
Alexa opened in 2007 and is one of Berlin’s largest shopping destinations. Its location near Alexanderplatz makes it easily accessible. You can reach it by S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus, and tram.
The Alexa stands out with its red concrete facade. The architects aimed for an Art Deco style. However, some Berliners call it the “Red Zwingburg” or “Pink Bunker”. This is due to its appearance and the fact that it stands on the former site of the police headquarters and later the Gestapo headquarters. Even former mayor Klaus Wowereit wasn’t initially convinced of its design.
Inside Alexa, you’ll find over 180 shops spread across five floors. These shops cover more than 50000 square metres. You can find fashion, cosmetics, electronics, home goods, and books. A large supermarket is in the basement.
If you get hungry, head to the food court. It offers a wide variety of dining options. There are also 1600 parking spaces in the basement for those arriving by car.
The Alexa’s curved shape links Jannowitzbrücke station with Alexanderplatz and the TV Tower. This design has earned it the nickname “banana” among some locals. Under the nearby S-Bahn tracks, you can find smaller shops, including a tattoo shop famous from the TV series “Berlin Tag & Nacht”.
More than a million people visit the Alexa each month. It’s a meeting point for locals and tourists alike. Over half of the shops sell fashion and accessories. Popular brands like H&M and Zara are here. Whether you need new sneakers, jogging pants, or a suit, Alexa has you covered. Several German and English bookstores add to the mall’s appeal.
