Housed in a warehouse on an industrial street is the Albion Art House. This gallery is part of the Albion Arts Hub. The hub includes a picture framing business, a furniture maker, and a small cafe called Outside In Albion.

The Albion Art House is more than just a gallery. It is a space where local contemporary artists display their talent. The Albion Art House runs regular exhibitions. It also offers an exhibition hire space.

When I visited the Albion Art House, it was hosting a group exhibition. The exhibition was called “Home Town”. It showcased five local artists. Their names are Amber Simpson, Holly Neilson, Jacqueline Scotcher, Helen Richards, and Ilona Vasvari.

The suburb of Albion itself has a rich history. It began as a sandstone quarry. The stone was used for Brisbane’s iconic buildings. Later, the arrival of the railway turned Albion into a thriving industrial area. Albion is now a bustling urban center.

The suburb is believed to be named after the Albion Hotel. The hotel was established in 1864. Tom Haselden, the hotel’s owner, was reminded of the white cliffs of Dover. These cliffs inspired him to name his hotel Albion. Albion comes from the Latin word “albus,” meaning white.

The Albion Art House is located on Greg Chappell Street. This street is named after the famous Australian cricketer. Greg Chappell played cricket for Australia in the 1970s and 1980s.

Albion has many historic sites. Take the Amble About Albion Heritage Trail. It is a 2.7-kilometre trail. The trail includes 18 points of interest. You will learn about Albion’s early European settlement. You will also discover its war-time activity during World War II.

The Albion Flour Mill was built in 1931. It was tragically destroyed by fire in 2013. The Albion Public Hall was built in 1887. It became the center for Albion’s social events.
