Founded in 1925 the Albert-Einstein-Realschule in Essen has a rich history. Initially known as the Städtische Knabenmittelschule it was located on Rübezahlstraße. Today that site houses the Kunsthaus Essen. After World War II classes resumed. Students even endured shift teaching for a time.

In 1953 a groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of a new building on Ardeyplatz. This was Essen’s first school construction project post-war. The school opened in its new location the following year. A name change was proposed then Schellenbergschule but the city council rejected it.

The school’s name changed again in the early 1960s. Friedrich-Ebert-Realschule and Albert-Einstein-Schule were considered. The latter name was chosen in 1962. Interestingly Albert Einstein’s heirs were hesitant. The famous physicist had distanced himself from Germany during his lifetime. He had even forbidden such naming during his life.

The Albert-Einstein-Realschule underwent several transformations. In 1965 a trial phase was introduced. Short school years and summer term changes followed in 1966 and 1967. Saturday classes were moved to one afternoon in 1971. This made the AES one of Essen’s first schools with a free Saturday. The school also implemented a differentiated curriculum in 1956. It later expanded this differentiation starting in 8th grade in 1999.

More recent developments include the 2004 renaming to Albert-Einstein-Realschule. A 25000-euro sunshade was added to the playground in 2018. Since 2021 Kerstin Sperling-Ischinsky has been the headmistress aiming to strengthen the school’s science profile.

The Albert-Einstein-Realschule offers a full-day program. After-school activities and clubs abound. These include everything from football and chess to glass painting and climate scouting. The school is also known for its open-ended learning approach in classes 5 6 and 7 based on Montessori principles.

Throughout its existence the Albert-Einstein-Realschule has prepared its students for life after graduation. This includes career guidance internships at local companies and various informative events. School trips have also been a hallmark. These range from stays at school camps on Sylt to ski trips in Mittenwald and foreign trips to countries like France and England.

The school boasts notable alumni including politician Detlev Samland musician Stefan Stoppok and actor Heinrich Schafmeister. The Albert-Einstein-Realschule stands as a testament to Essen’s commitment to education. It continues to thrive adapting to modern needs while preserving a rich legacy. Its story is a dynamic blend of history innovation and a dedication to nurturing the minds of future generations.
