From a king to a knight. The Albert I Bust immortalizes a ruler beloved by his people. Here, at the entrance to Mont des Arts, the bronze likeness of King Albert I commands attention. The bust is a tribute to Belgium’s “Soldier King”. He led his troops with courage during World War I. Alfred Courtens, sculptor to the Belgian royal court, created this piece in 1950. Albert I, born in 1875, became king in 1909. His reign, spanning until 1934, witnessed a tumultuous period in Belgian history. During World War I, German forces occupied most of Belgium. Albert I refused to abandon his people. He remained with his troops near the front lines, earning the respect and admiration of his countrymen. He prioritized his soldiers’ well-being, making strategic decisions that minimized Belgian casualties. Tragically, Albert I’s life was cut short. He died in a mountaineering accident in 1934. The Albert I Bust serves not just as a memorial. It represents the enduring legacy of a king who prioritized his nation and his soldiers above all else. His bravery, leadership, and dedication continue to inspire generations of Belgians.
