Whispers of English royalty drift through the trees of Albemarle Playground. This isn’t just any playground. It’s a little slice of London nestled in Brooklyn. Albemarle Playground’s namesake is a London street. That street in turn honors the Duke of Albemarle. This connection adds a touch of unexpected elegance to this vibrant community space.
Albemarle Playground opened in 1961. It was a joint effort between the Parks Department and the Board of Education. The playground served as a recreational haven for nearby P.S. 230. It also provided a vital recreational space for the surrounding neighborhood. For over 35 years Albemarle Playground thrived without major renovations. Then in 1996 everything changed.
A $542,000 renovation transformed the playground. This was thanks to Council Member Stephen DiBrienza. The upgrade included new equipment for children. There were also new amenities for older residents. The children’s area received trees drinking fountains benches swings and colorful gym equipment. A fireman’s pole and walking bridge added extra fun. Safety surfacing a spray shower game tables and block pavement enhanced the area.
The renovation extended to the athletic facilities. Two basketball courts and a recreational field were revamped. New backboards and paving made these areas more enjoyable for sports enthusiasts. The renovated Albemarle Playground stands as a testament to community effort. It continues to be a beloved spot for residents of all ages.
