Envision a small group gathered in the auditorium of Alamo Heights High School in March 1928. These nine individuals were laying the foundation for what would become Alamo Heights Baptist Church. The Alamo Heights Baptist Church, originally named Broadway Baptist Church, held its first service later that year on December 9th at 2:30 pm. Led by Pastor L.E. Gates, they met at 5906 Broadway. The name change to Broadway Baptist Church was implemented to avoid confusion with the downtown Alamo Baptist Church. This seemingly simple act reveals a fascinating detail about the Alamo Heights Baptist Church’s history. It speaks to a time when clear communication, even in church names, was essential. The church eventually reclaimed its original name, Alamo Heights Baptist Church, at the end of 1931, after the downtown Alamo Baptist Church relocated and rebranded. In 1948, Alamo Heights Baptist Church moved to its current location at 6501 Broadway. Interestingly, the original church building, built in 1930, found a second life as the “Mule Stall” behind Alamo Heights High School. It remained there until its demolition about five years prior to 2025. Today, Pastor Bobby Contreras leads the congregation. He is also the chaplain for the Alamo Heights fire and police departments. Alamo Heights Baptist Church invites everyone to join them Sunday mornings at 10:30 am.
