Picture this a lush green oasis in the heart of Gibraltar. Welcome to the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park a true hidden gem. Established in 1994 this park wasn’t always the haven it is today. It began humbly with a collection of rescued animals. Gibraltar Customs confiscated parrots tortoises and monkeys from illegal traders. These animals found refuge thanks to the Gibraltar Ornithological and Natural History Society GONHS.

Initially housed in makeshift cages within the Alameda Gardens the growing number of rescued animals required a larger space. The solution an old neglected miniature golf course transformed through the incredible dedication of volunteers. The park wasn’t just a shelter it became a vital educational center. It teaches people about local wildlife conservation and the devastating effects of the illegal wildlife trade.

The Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is more than just a zoo. It participates in European and international breeding programs. It helps to protect endangered species raising awareness of vital conservation issues worldwide. The park’s immersive natural rock work habitats create enriching environments for its animal residents. These habitats provide a much-needed sanctuary for animals rescued from difficult situations often malnourished injured or psychologically distressed. The park works tirelessly to rehabilitate these animals helping them recover and relearn essential natural behaviors.

Today the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park is immaculate. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. Thanks to volunteers and generous funding from the Parasol Foundation and the Gibraltar Government. the park ensures these animals live full and interesting lives. It also plays a crucial role in protecting native species. Some animals like the red fox the raven and the Barbary partridge are candidates for future reintroduction to the Upper Rock Nature Reserve. The park is an essential educational resource for local schools. It educates the public about Gibraltar’s rich biodiversity and broader conservation issues.

The park’s future is bright with planned additions like a Local Biodiversity Education Area a quarantine area and an Indigenous species exhibit. So next time you’re in Gibraltar don’t miss the Alameda Wildlife Conservation Park. It’s a place where conservation education and the welfare of animals go hand in hand creating a memorable and impactful experience for everyone who visits.
