Why did King Saud choose this very spot? Here, before the imposing Al Malaz Municipality, we uncover a story of vision and transformation. Al Malaz Municipality, once just an idea, stands as a testament to Riyadh’s progress. Initially known as the “Al-Malaz Housing Project,” it marked the beginning of Riyadh’s modernization. King Saud envisioned a new Riyadh, distinct from its traditional mud-brick past. He chose this area, then known for its horse racing field called al-Malaz Square, to house government employees relocating from Jeddah. The project started in the 1950s with 750 villas, and later expanded to include apartments and essential services. Al Malaz wasn’t just houses though. It was designed with a municipal hall, a library, a fire station, schools, a market, and even recreational and health facilities. This area, Al Malaz, quickly bloomed into a vibrant neighborhood, a symbol of the new era. It became the heart of a bustling community, evolving from a quiet residential area to a dynamic hub. Today, Al Malaz Municipality continues to serve the community, a tangible link to King Saud’s vision. This very ground we stand on reflects the spirit of innovation and growth that defines modern Riyadh.
