Al Rajhi Grand Mosque is also known as Sheikh Sulaiman Al-Rajhi Mosque. It stands as a prominent Sunni Islam mosque in Riyadh’s al-Jazirah neighborhood. Sulaiman bin Abdulaziz Al-Rajhi funded its construction. He was a Saudi businessman and billionaire.

Opened in 2004 Al Rajhi Grand Mosque showcases Moorish Revival architecture. This style evokes the splendor of Andalusia. The mosque is among the largest in Riyadh. It is also considered one of the largest in Saudi Arabia and the Arab world.

Before Al Rajhi Grand Mosque, an older mosque stood in al-Safa neighborhood since 1985. Al Rajhi Grand Mosque replaced this older structure. The mosque is known for providing Islamic funerary services. These include ritual baths and prayers for the deceased. Previously these services were in the al-Rabwah neighborhood.

Prince Salman bin Abdulaziz inaugurated Al Rajhi Grand Mosque on September 26, 2004. He was the governor of Riyadh at the time. Shortly after the opening, street vendors created an open-air marketplace in the mosque’s eastern parking lot. This caused overcrowding. The Al-Riyadh daily newspaper reported the issue. They asked municipal authorities to intervene.

In 2005, the mosque’s library opened. It initially held around 3000 books. By 2013, this collection grew to approximately 16000 books and 47000 volumes.

Al Rajhi Grand Mosque hosted funeral prayers for notable figures. In 2011, Saleh bin Abdulaziz al-Rajhi’s funeral prayers were held here. He was the founder of Al Rajhi Bank. Mohamed bin Abdulaziz al-Rajhi’s funeral prayers also took place at the mosque in 2012. He was the brother of Saleh and Sulaiman.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Al Rajhi Grand Mosque faced closures. In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a global pandemic. King Salman bin Abdulaziz announced a nationwide curfew. Al Rajhi Grand Mosque closed to worshippers until June 2020. Restrictions were eased and worshippers returned in limited numbers with social distancing. In 2021, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs recognized Al Rajhi Grand Mosque. It became one of twelve mosques in Riyadh designated for Islamic funerary rituals. This was to contain the spread of COVID-19.

Al Rajhi Grand Mosque briefly appeared in the 2023 Indian film “Dunki”. The film incorrectly depicted the mosque as part of Jeddah’s skyline.
