Could a palace truly live up to the name “Incomparable”? Here at Al Badaia Palace in Marrakech, that was the very question posed by Sultan Ahmad al-Mansur. He began construction on this magnificent structure in 1578, just months after ascending to power. Al Badaia Palace wasn’t merely a residence. It was a declaration. A testament to the Saadian dynasty’s power and wealth, meant to dazzle ambassadors and visitors. Al-Mansur envisioned a palace so grand, so opulent, it would earn the name “El Badi,” meaning “The Incomparable” – one of the 99 names of God in Islam. He spared no expense. Think of Italian marble, shimmering gold, and onyx sourced from far-off lands. Imagine artisans from across Europe and Africa working tirelessly to bring his vision to life. The palace was designed around a massive courtyard, a sprawling space that once held a vast pool and four sunken gardens. These gardens were symmetrical, echoing the traditional riad design but on an unprecedented scale. At each end of the courtyard stood grand pavilions, topped with ornate domes. The western pavilion, the Qubba al-Khamsiniya or “Pavilion of the Fifty,” served as the throne room. It was here that al-Mansur received guests, seated beneath a carved inscription in black marble against a backdrop of gleaming white. The eastern pavilion, the Qubbat az-Zujaj or “Pavilion of Crystal,” was al-Mansur’s private sanctuary. Unfortunately, Al Badaia Palace’s glory was short-lived. After al-Mansur’s death in 1603, the palace fell into neglect, a victim of the dynasty’s decline. The vibrant zellij tilework, intricate stucco, and gilded ceilings were gradually stripped away, repurposed for other structures throughout Morocco. While Al Badaia Palace stands in ruins today, its scale and layout still whisper tales of its former grandeur. It serves as a poignant reminder of the fleeting nature of power and the enduring beauty of Moroccan artistry.
