Seven arches span the Ankara River. This is Akköprü the White Bridge. A silent witness to centuries of history it stands proudly.

Akköprü is more than just a bridge. It’s the oldest bridge in Ankara. Built in the early 13th century it played a vital role. It was part of the ancient trade route to Baghdad. Merchants and travelers crossed its sturdy stones. They carried goods and stories between distant lands.

Commissioned by Kızıl Bey the Seljuk governor of Ankara Akköprü’s construction began in 1222. Under the reign of Sultan Alaaddin Kayqubad I skilled artisans shaped basalt stones. They carefully fitted them together. The seven arches formed a graceful curve. The wide central arch was designed for strength and stability. It is a testament to their engineering prowess.

Two inscriptions once adorned its western side. One remains partially visible. The inscriptions held stories. These stories detailed the bridge’s construction and the era in which it was built. This makes the bridge a living history book.

Over time Akköprü has undergone repairs and restorations. Its structure remains remarkably intact. The metallic parapets are a later addition but they add to its character. Today Akköprü’s grandeur still captures the imagination.

Akköprü stands as a symbol of Ankara’s enduring spirit. It connects the past with the present. It connects the old Varlık neighbourhood with the bustling modern city. Walk across Akköprü. Feel the cool stone underfoot. Imagine the countless footsteps that have crossed it before you. Akköprü awaits you a bridge through time.
