You know, some people might drive right past Airway Baptist Church South. It’s easy to miss, tucked away off Telephone Road. But, it’s a church overflowing with history and dedication. The church’s roots go back to the 1950s, when families moving into the East End of Houston started meeting in homes for prayer and bible study. 30 people! It wasn’t long before they were gathering in a barn on Telephone Road, called Mykawa Baptist Chapel. After some time, the mission grew, and the community realized they needed a larger church. In 1953, they purchased land for a future building. Just a year later, they broke ground on their first official church building, at a cost of $16,000. What a feat for that time! In 1957, the Baptist church, which had been meeting for almost 7 years, became its own official church, changing its name to Airway Baptist Church, a name that is still used proudly over 65 years later. Since then, Airway Baptist has been a constant in the community, welcoming new families with open arms and carrying on a legacy of faith, fellowship, and service. If you look closely, you might even catch a glimpse of the bricks laid by members laying bricks for their nursery, kitchen, and classrooms. We’re standing before a church that’s not just walls, but a living testament of community, dedication, and faith. As you look at Airway Baptist Church South, it’s easy to sense a warmth and a dedication that’s been passed down through generations, a testament to the power of faith in a changing world.
