Behold The Peaks, a monumental gateway to Salt Lake City. This isn’t just any airport art. It’s a 75-ton tribute to Utah’s majestic natural beauty.

Salt Lake City International Airport finally got its grand entrance in 2020. Before that, a simple green highway sign sufficed. But now, The Peaks welcomes visitors with a powerful statement.

The Peaks, dedicated in November 2023, is more than just a sculpture. It represents the state’s five Native American tribes. These are the Ute, Diné (Navajo), Paiute, Goshute, and Shoshone. It also embodies the five essential elements. Air, earth, fire, space, and water.

Crafted by artist Gordon Huether, The Peaks features five weathered Corten steel structures. The tallest soars 90 feet high, like a 12-story building. The smallest stands at 39 feet.

Look closely. Each peak displays an abstracted world map. Solid areas represent land. Expanded metal symbolizes the oceans. A glass orb sits atop the highest peak. It marks Utah’s location, offering a “You Are Here” moment.

Mayor Erin Mendenhall highlights the city’s priorities. The airport’s art program spans nearly 50 years. The Peaks reflects the mountains Utah is known for.

Huether views his creation as a warm Utah welcome. He aims to celebrate the state’s natural beauty throughout the airport. His other works include a replica of slot canyons and a river-themed tunnel. He also helped restore the Hoberman Arch.

Bill Wyatt, director of the Salt Lake City Department of Airports, emphasizes its significance. The Peaks marks the airport entrance. It honors Utah’s mountains and original inhabitants.

The $6 million project was funded by the airport’s redevelopment budget. No city general funds were used. Huether, based in Napa, specializes in large-scale installations. The Peaks is one of the largest airport gateway sculptures in the country.

So, as you pass The Peaks, remember its deeper meaning. It’s a celebration of Utah’s heritage and natural wonders. It’s a monumental hello to all who arrive.
