Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s your tour guide ready to whisk you through the clouds of history at the Indian Air Force Museum in Delhi. Established in 1967, this museum preserves and showcases the heritage of the Indian Air Force. It is located at the Palam Air Force Station.
The Indian Air Force Museum was once the only one of its kind in India. That was until the Naval Aviation Museum in Goa opened in 1998. Then the HAL Aerospace Museum in Bangalore opened in 2001.
Let’s step inside the museum. The indoor display gallery contains historic photographs and memorabilia. See the uniforms and personal weapons of the Indian Air Force. They date back to its inception in 1932. This gallery leads us to a hangar. It exhibits small aircraft and Air Force inventory. Anti-aircraft guns and vehicles are also present.
Outside, the outdoor gallery showcases larger aircraft. You can see war trophies and radar equipment. Captured enemy vehicles are also on display at the Indian Air Force Museum. It gives you goosebumps right?
Did you know the Indian Air Force Museum highlights humanitarian efforts? It emphasizes disaster relief and medical evacuation. The museum also has a Memorial Hall. This pays tribute to Air Force personnel. They sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
Now let’s talk about the metal birds. In the Hangar, you can marvel at the Westland Lysander and the Hawker Hurricane II B AB-832. Don’t miss the Dassault Mystere IVa IA-1329. The Vintage Aircraft Flight keeps some rare aircraft airworthy. Sadly, these aren’t usually accessible to the public. However, large transport aircraft are displayed on Air Force Day. That is on October 8.
In 2006, the Indian Air Force decided to procure more space. The aim was to improve the aircraft presentation. They chose a new site near the domestic airport terminal. This will create a new Aerospace Museum. It will feature aircraft parked and hung as if in flight.
