Who could imagine a bustling metropolis thriving right here in ‘Ain Ghazal nearly 9,000 years ago? ‘Ain Ghazal wasn’t always a quiet archaeological site. Around 7000 BC, this place pulsed with the energy of around 3,000 people. That’s a population four to five times larger than Jericho at the time. ‘Ain Ghazal, meaning “Spring of the Gazelle,” lived up to its name. Situated near the Zarqa River, the longest river in Jordan’s highlands, it offered a rich environment. The location, at an elevation of 720 meters, nestled between oak woodlands and open steppe-desert, provided a diverse range of resources for the inhabitants. The people of ‘Ain Ghazal weren’t just hunters and gatherers. They were innovators, cultivating barley, wheat, peas, beans, lentils, and chickpeas. They domesticated goats, supplementing their diet with hunted gazelle, deer, and other wild animals. Evidence suggests that the surrounding area was heavily forested.
