Perhaps it is the sweet scent of sugarcane that lingers in the air around Aiea. It is faint, a ghostly reminder of Aiea’s past. Aiea is a census-designated place here in Honolulu. It offers a glimpse into Hawaii’s transformation.

Once Aiea was dominated by the vast sugarcane fields of the Honolulu Sugar Company. The Aiea Sugar Mill was a central part of life here. In 1897 the Aiea Sugar Mill opened its doors. It was a vital part of the community. Imagine the bustling activity. Workers harvested and processed sugarcane. The mill operated for nearly a century. It shaped Aiea’s identity.

But Aiea’s history extends far beyond sugarcane. The name “Aiea” itself comes from a native plant. It is from the nightshade family called Nothocestrum latifolium. This plant grew throughout the area. The ahupuaa, an ancient Hawaiian land division, was named Aiea. It stretched from Aiea Bay up into the mountains.

December 7, 1941, forever changed Aiea. The attack on Pearl Harbor deeply impacted the town. Aiea’s proximity to Pearl Harbor meant it was in the midst of the chaos. Many people witnessed the attack from the hills of Aiea. The USS Vestal, damaged in the attack, beached in Aiea Bay to prevent sinking. The Aiea Naval Hospital was built as part of Naval Base Hawaii.

After World War II, Aiea transitioned away from its plantation roots. The sugar mill was converted into a refinery. Developers began building new homes in the sugarcane fields. Aiea grew into a Honolulu suburb. In 1996 C and H Sugar closed the refinery. Two years later, in 1998, the sugar mill was torn down. Despite protests from residents, the mill was gone.

Today, Aiea is a thriving community with a population of approximately 9,610. The population has decreased by 1.23% since 2020. Aiea has a median age of 42.9 years. The median household income is about $156,555.

Aiea is home to Pearlridge. It is Hawaii’s largest enclosed shopping center. It features a monorail that connects Uptown and Downtown. The Pali Momi Medical Center, is located on the mall property. Aiea is also home to Hawaii’s largest watercress farm, Sumida Farm.

Aiea offers more than just shopping and agriculture. Keaiwa Heiau is an ancient medicine shrine located here. A 4.5-mile loop trail leads to a World War II plane wreck.

Aiea is also home to several educational institutions. Alvah A. Scott Elementary School, Aiea High School, and St. Elizabeth Catholic School are all located in Aiea.

As you explore Aiea today, remember its layered past. From its sugarcane roots to its role in World War II, Aiea has transformed. Now Aiea is a vibrant community. The blend of history and modern life makes Aiea a special place in Hawaii.
