Has anyone ever heard the haunting melodies of Yunus Emre Oratorio? Right here at the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Merkezi, the legacy of the man who composed this masterpiece, Ahmed Adnan Saygun, is preserved. Ahmed Adnan Saygun was born in Izmir in 1907. He became a pivotal figure in Turkish music. He was a composer, music educator, and ethnomusicologist. He blended Western classical music with Turkish traditions. Saygun is recognized as one of the “Turkish Five” composers. He earned the distinction of being Turkey’s first state artist. The Ahmed Adnan Saygun Merkezi, located within Bilkent University, safeguards his invaluable contributions to music. Saygun’s life was marked by both triumphs and setbacks. He studied in Paris with renowned musicians like Vincent d’Indy and Paul le Flem. He even won a prize for his orchestral piece, Divertissement, in 1931. Upon returning to Turkey, he taught music and composed the first Turkish opera, Özsoy, in just one month. This opera premiered in the presence of Atatürk and Reza Pahlavi, the Shah of Iran. Unfortunately, later, Saygun experienced a period of being out of favor. This lasted until the premiere of his most famous work, Yunus Emre Oratorio, in 1946. This oratorio brought him international acclaim. It has been performed worldwide, including in Paris and New York under the baton of Leopold Stokowski. The Ahmed Adnan Saygun Merkezi not only houses his archives but also promotes research and performance of contemporary Turkish music.
