Why does this submarine’s conning tower stand here, overlooking the bustling port of Haifa? This, my friends, is the Ahi Dakar memorial, a poignant reminder of a tragic mystery. The Ahi Dakar, originally HMS Totem of the British Royal Navy, was a T-class submarine purchased by Israel in 1965. Her name, Dakar, means “swordfish” in Hebrew, a fitting moniker for this sleek vessel. On November 10, 1967, the Dakar was commissioned into the Israeli Navy, a proud moment. The submarine embarked on its maiden voyage to Israel in January 1968, sailing from Portsmouth, England. The journey was supposed to culminate in a grand welcome at Haifa. The crew, 69 men strong, were eager to reach their new home port. But fate had other plans. On January 25th, 1968, after a routine transmission, the Ahi Dakar vanished without a trace. The silence from the submarine sparked an international search effort. Ships and planes scoured the Mediterranean, hoping for a sign. Despite the extensive search, the Dakar remained lost. The disappearance of the Ahi Dakar became one of the great naval mysteries of 1968. It joined the ranks of other submarines lost that same year, including the French Minerve, the Soviet K-129, and the American USS Scorpion. For over thirty years, the families of the crew lived with unanswered questions. Where did the Dakar go? What happened to their loved ones? Then, in 1999, a joint American-Israeli search team located the wreckage of the Ahi Dakar between Crete and Cyprus, at a depth of 3,000 meters. The discovery brought a sense of closure, but the mystery of the sinking remained. What caused this tragedy? Mechanical failure? Human error? Or something else entirely? While the exact cause is still unknown, the recovered conning tower now serves as a memorial. It stands here in Haifa, a solemn tribute to the 69 lost sailors of the Ahi Dakar. Their memory lives on, a reminder of the sacrifices made by those who serve at sea. The Ahi Dakar memorial is more than just a monument. It is a symbol of hope, resilience, and the enduring spirit of the Israeli Navy.
