Arose in the early twentieth century the need for the Agudath Yisroel. It became the political voice of Ashkenazi Torah Judaism. Today we stand before Agudath Yisroel of Madison a vital part of that legacy.

Agudath Yisroel emerged from a conference in Katowice in 1912. Jewish religious leaders established it. They sought to strengthen Orthodox institutions independently. This was separate from the Zionist movement.

World War I delayed the organization’s progress initially. However Rabbis Pinchas Kohn and Emmanuel Carlebach aided the German forces in Poland. They collaborated with Rabbi Avraham Mordechai Alter. This led to the development of Agudath Israel. The goal was to unite Eastern and Western European Orthodox Judaism.

Agudath Israel attracted many followers especially among Hasidic Jews. They even had representatives in the Polish parliament. Prominent Torah scholars like the Gerrer Rebbe also led Agudath Yisroel.

In the United Kingdom the Adath Israel Synagogue represented the movement. Harry Goodman played a key role in maintaining the organization through World War II.

After World War II Agudath Israel helped Holocaust survivors in Europe. Branches existed in London Switzerland and Allied-occupied Germany.

When Israel was founded Agudath Israel made an agreement with the state. This ensured rabbinical coordination and the observance of Sabbath laws. It became a political party in Israel. It secured seats in the Knesset. This was either as Agudat Israel or with other Orthodox groups.

The World Agudath Israel held international conferences called HaKnessia HaGedolah. Spiritual and political leaders from around the world attended. Six congresses were held with the last in 1980.

The original Agudath Israel movement was founded in Europe in 1912. Famous Orthodox rabbis were among them. These included Rabbi Yisroel Meir Kagen and Rabbi Chaim Ozer Grodzinski.

Rabbi Eliezer Silver established the first American office in the 1930s. After the Holocaust prominent rabbis in America formed the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah. This led to rapid growth especially in yeshiva-based communities.

Mike Tress led the expansion in the early 1940s. Rabbi Moshe Sherer then took over as president. In 2008 Rabbi Chaim Dovid Zwiebel became Executive Vice-President.

Agudath Israel’s policies are guided by the Moetzes Gedolei HaTorah. This council consists of rosh yeshivas and Hasidic rebbes. They set policies based on Da’as Torah.

Today Agudath Yisroel of Madison stands as a testament. It reflects dedication to faith tradition and community. It shows the enduring legacy of Agudath Israel.
