A colossal dome dominates the skyline. This is Agios Panteleimonas. It’s not just any church. It’s one of the largest in the Balkans. Imagine its construction starting in the 1920s. It was one of the first buildings in Athens made of concrete. A marvel of its time.

Agios Panteleimonas church stands proudly in the Agios Panteleimonas neighbourhood of Athens. It’s located northwest of the city centre. You’ll find it nestled between Viktorias Square and Attikis Square. The main street Acharnon Avenue runs right by it. The church is so significant that the entire neighbourhood is named after it.

The church’s beginnings were humble. A smaller church existed on this site. It was much smaller. It had three aisles each with its own roof. However plans for a bigger church were drawn up by architect Ioannis Papadakis. King George I laid the foundation stone on September 12 1910. Construction began in the 1920s. The massive dome was completed between 1929 and 1930. It was a striking feature. The construction faced unexpected obstacles. The route of the Piraeus-Kifissia electric railway was to pass nearby. The older church had to be demolished. Fortunately the railway company helped fund the construction of a new and larger church. A temporary church was built beneath the dome. It was inaugurated in 1930 by Archbishop Chrysostomos. Work continued sporadically. Architect Georgios Nomikos finalized the project based on Papadakis’ original plans. The temporary church was torn down in 1951. The magnificent church we see today was finally completed in the early 1980s.

The interior is breathtaking. Giannis Karoussos a renowned religious artist spent 23 years decorating the vast interior spaces. The church’s feast day is celebrated on July 27th. The church is far more than a place of worship. It’s a testament to the resilience of faith and a landmark in the fabric of modern Athens. Agios Panteleimonas is a symbol of faith. It shows the enduring spirit of Athens. It’s a magnificent example of interwar architecture.

Now take a moment. Look up at the dome. Consider the history held within these walls. Feel the weight of the years. Agios Panteleimonas stands as a testament to faith. It’s a symbol of resilience. It’s a beacon in the heart of Athens. And it’s a must-see on any Athenian adventure.
