Did the mythical King Afrasiyab truly exist? Here at Afrasiyab, an ancient site in Samarkand, Uzbekistan, the whispers of his name echo through time. Afrasiyab isn’t just a hill; it’s a time capsule buried beneath centuries of history. For over two thousand years, from roughly 500 BC to 1220 AD, this was the heart of Samarkand, a bustling city that predates even the Mongol invasion. The name Afrasiyab, though linked to the mythical king, is likely a distorted form of the Persian word “Parsīāb,” meaning “beyond the black river.” This “black river” is believed to be the Siāhāb, which flows north of the site. Afrasiyab covers a sprawling 220 hectares. The layers of history are stacked deep, some reaching 8 to 12 meters. Imagine a city shaped like a triangle, its base facing south, perched on a hill for defense. High walls once guarded this ancient settlement, remnants of which still stand an impressive 40 meters high. Within these walls, life flourished. Water flowed through channels and earthenware pipes, filling large reservoirs, one of which could hold nearly a million gallons. Homes were built with unbaked bricks and wooden frameworks, some featuring windows adorned with gypsum lattices and glass. Afrasiyab wasn’t just homes; it was a complex urban center. Archaeologists have unearthed bathhouses, remnants of a Buddhist fresco, and even a Samanid palace. Coins discovered here tell tales of different eras, from the Sasanids to the Mongols, painting a vivid picture of Afrasiyab’s diverse inhabitants. The most stunning discoveries are the Afrasiyab frescoes, now housed in the nearby Afrasiyab Museum of Samarkand. These murals depict scenes from the 7th century AD, showcasing King Varkhuman receiving ambassadors from distant lands, including China. One mural even shows a Chinese embassy bearing gifts of silk and silkworm cocoons. Afrasiyab’s story ends abruptly in 1220 AD with the Mongol siege. The once-great city was destroyed, abandoned to the sands of time. Today, as you stand on this grassy mound, imagine the vibrant city that once was, the echoes of its inhabitants, and the legacy of Afrasiyab.
