Have you ever heard of the Afghan Red Crescent? Well, right behind me stands a symbol of hope in a country that’s seen a great deal of hardship. This isn’t just a building; it’s an organization that extends a helping hand to those in need, no matter their background. The Afghan Red Crescent Society, known simply as ARCS, has been a vital part of Afghanistan’s humanitarian efforts for over 70 years. Founded back in 1934, their mission is to alleviate human suffering, improve health, and protect human dignity. It’s no easy task in a region that has been riddled with conflict and natural disasters. ARCS volunteers and staff have been working tirelessly to respond to emergencies, provide crucial medical care, and support communities in need. They’ve been through several wars and countless natural disasters, like droughts, floods, and earthquakes, often providing the only lifeline for many desperately seeking aid. The Afghan Red Crescent Society is supported by countless individuals and organizations worldwide, including those in the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, and Japan. They even maintain strong ties with other National Societies like those in Iran, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. In 2013 alone, ARCS assisted over 700,000 Afghans with their disaster preparedness programs, provided support to more than 430,000 through long-term development initiatives, and helped over 30,000 affected by acute disasters. In 2019, the organization was led by Ms. Husn Banu Ghazanfar, who guided the organization through many challenges. Though the ARCS may not always be in the spotlight, they quietly and diligently work to bring aid and hope to communities across Afghanistan. It’s a reminder that even in the most challenging of times, there are people committed to making a difference.
