The mighty Affing, a small village nestled in the heart of Swabia, whispers secrets of a rich history. You might think it’s just a peaceful corner of Bavaria, but Affing hides a tale woven through centuries. Founded in ancient times, its roots trace back to the Romans and the Franks, who both left their mark on this fertile land. This village is a living time capsule, with unearthed relics from the earliest settlements, evidence of Roman copper coins found in its gardens, and grave goods in the Mandlingholz woods from the 1819 excavation. Affing’s story is etched in stone, in the very foundation of the village. The village’s first documented mention in 1040, reveals that it was once a focal point for the nobles. Affing, as a Hofmark, was a unique power center, boasting a distinct judicial, financial, judicial, and political authority.
The 14th century witnessed the construction of a mighty fortress, its imposing presence dominating the landscape. However, in 1462, fate intervened. The fortress fell prey to the flames, ravaged by the Margrave Albrecht Achilles of Brandenburg. Although the flames consumed the fortress, a spirit of resilience prevailed. Rebuilt by Wolfgang von Waldeck, Affing rose from the ashes. It was the Stauding family, who acquired the village in 1621, that transformed Affing into the charming village it is today. The Stauding family commissioned the construction of a luxurious castle, a testament to their power and affluence. The existing castle, built in 1694, is a testament to this era. Its baroque splendor still shimmers through the centuries. This enchanting tale, however, takes a tragic turn. In 1927, flames engulfed the castle again, destroying the legacy of centuries and leaving only fragments of its past. The devastating fire led to the loss of irreplaceable treasures, including the very room where Kaiser Napoleon III once stayed.
Thankfully, the castle’s magnificence was not lost forever. Oswald Bieber led a meticulous reconstruction that restored the castle to its former glory. Now, though not open to the public, the stately walls of Affing Castle stand as a silent sentinel, guarding the village’s legacy. The castle, nestled amidst lush landscaped gardens, is a serene vision of bygone days. The gardens, a testament to the love of Countess Eleonore von Gravenreuth, who curated the English-style landscape with meandering streams and charming bridges. Affing’s tale is an enduring tapestry woven from hardship and triumph, a story that whispers from the walls of its castle, as if inviting you to unravel its secrets.
