How powerful this Aeritalia G.91Y looks. Right in front of you stands a testament to Italian engineering and a key player in Cold War aviation. The Aeritalia G.91Y, nicknamed “Yankee”, wasn’t just a simple upgrade from its predecessor, the Fiat G.91. It was a complete redesign. This single-seater powerhouse was born from the need for a light, agile, and powerful ground-attack aircraft. The Italian Air Force craved more punch. So, they replaced the single engine of the older G.91 with two roaring General Electric J85 turbojets. This doubled the thrust, giving the Aeritalia G.91Y an incredible boost in speed and performance. This beast could reach a top speed of Mach 0.95. Imagine that, almost breaking the sound barrier! The Aeritalia G.91Y served the Italian Air Force faithfully until its retirement in 1994. It never saw action outside of Italy. But its story is a reminder of Italy’s contribution to Cold War aviation.
