Manufactured in 1952, the Aereo Fiat G59 4B stands as a testament to Italian aviation’s post-war rebirth. This isn’t just any plane. It’s one of only five surviving G.59s, a symbol of resilience and innovation. The Aereo Fiat G59 4B, housed in the Museum of Engines and Mechanisms of the University of Palermo, boasts a rich history. Designed by Giuseppe Gabrielli, the G.59 evolved from the Fiat G.55 Centauro fighter. This two-seater trainer aircraft represents the final stage of high-performance piston engine aircraft before the jet age. The Aereo Fiat G59 4B served the Italian Air Force until the late 1960s, primarily for advanced training and aerobatics. Its powerful Rolls Royce Merlin 500-20 engine roared with 1660 horsepower, propelling the aircraft to a top speed of 378 mph. Imagine pilots soaring to 39,700 feet, the powerful engine pushing them higher. The four-blade propeller, crafted from aluminum alloy, automatically adjusted its pitch for optimal performance. The Aereo Fiat G59 4B’s journey to Palermo is a story in itself. Starting its service in Bari with the markings RB-40, it later moved to Rome’s Seconda Regione Aerea. There, it received the markings RR 73 and a new emblem on its tail. Finally, it found a home at the University of Palermo in 1968, landing at Boccadifalco, Palermo’s former airport. Here, it stands proudly, its original grey livery, Italian tricolour roundels, and Air Force markings still visible. Even the emblem of the Seconda Regione Aerea remains on its tail. The Aereo Fiat G59 4B underwent a meticulous restoration in 2012. The Museum of Engines and Mechanisms carefully disassembled, reconditioned, and reassembled the aircraft. Missing parts, no longer available, were recreated using cutting-edge technology. Optical scanners, CAD/CAM systems, and 3D printing breathed new life into this historic machine. This Aereo Fiat G59 4B, bearing the military serial number 53530, invites you to step back in time. It offers a glimpse into a pivotal era in aviation history. It’s a reminder of Italian ingenuity and the enduring legacy of these magnificent machines.
